What to Expect on the Water

Fishing Tactics & Top Gear

Out here, we play the game a few different ways. For kings and cobia, we'll often troll with live bait or lures - nothing beats the thrill of a smoker king skyrocketing on a blue runner. When we're after snapper, we'll drop lines and jig over structure. Shark fishing? That's a whole different ball game - we'll set up a chum slick and wait for the big boys to come investigate. Don't worry about bringing any gear; we've got top-notch rods, reels, and tackle all ready to go. Just bring a good attitude and maybe a lucky hat.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Kingfish: These speedsters are the bread and butter of Gulf fishing. They'll smoke a reel faster than you can say "fish on!" and put up one heck of a fight. We typically see 'em in the 15-30 pound range, but don't be surprised if we tangle with a 40+ pounder. Kings are around most of the year, but summer and early fall is prime time.

Cobia: Also known as ling, these bruisers are like the linebackers of the sea. They're curious fish, often swimming right up to the boat to check us out. That's when you want to be ready with a live bait or a well-placed jig. Cobia start showing up in spring and stick around through fall. A 30-pounder will give you a run for your money, and they're excellent on the grill.

Red Snapper: If you've never pulled up a big red from 100 feet down, you're in for a treat. These fish fight hard and taste even better. We mainly target them on our 8-hour trips when they're in season (usually June and July). There's nothing quite like seeing that crimson flash coming up from the deep blue.

Sharks: From blacktips to bulls, sharks always get the adrenaline pumping. We practice catch and release with these apex predators, but trust me, you'll never forget the power of a 6-foot shark on the end of your line. They're around year-round, but summer brings them in closer to shore.

Mahi-Mahi (Dorado): These acrobatic fish are the wildcards of our offshore trips. When we find them, it's usually a fast and furious bite. They're absolutely gorgeous fish - electric blue and golden yellow - and they fight like crazy, leaping and tail-walking across the surface. Late summer and early fall give us our best shot at these beauties.
